The Sweet Surrender of Janet Buchanan

The Sweet Surrender of Janet Buchanan
by Paula Quinn

A highlander with so many lasses, suddenly found that his heart has been conquered by a woman of a rival clan.
Janet and Darach's story starts in the first book of the Highland Heirs series, The Seduction of Miss Amelia Bell. Their story is small, you know there is an attraction between them but you don't get to know more about it until The Sweet Surrender of Janet Buchanan.
Janet is a very independent, strong, smart and fearless woman. She is the sister of Will Buchanan, chief of the Clan Buchanan. I will admit that I could not stand Janet in book 1, but by the end of this novella, she had grown on me.

The Buchanan clan was living at the Ravenglade castle, property of the Grants, (read The Seduction of Miss Amelia Bell to know more about it) when the chief of the Clan Menzie, Roddie Menzie, demanded that the Buchanan chief give up the castle to him. So, Will Buchanan asked Malcolm Grant, the owner of the castle and cousin to Darach, to come to take care of the matter. However, he was unable to go because his sister was kidnapped by pirates (which is the story for book 2 in the series, The Wicked ways of Alexander Kidd) and he sent Darach instead. In the meantime, Will promised his sister to Rodie Menzie, just to buy some time until Grant could get there. But what Janet did not expect was Darach to come to her rescue. Yes, he went to her rescue because there was no way that Darch was going to let Janet marry another man. Janet and Darach argued all the time, they never wanted to admit the feelings that they have for the other. That is, until once in the castle Darach found out how she felt about him and that changed everything. These two were made for each other, they deserve each other.

I became a fan of Paula Quinn with only reading 2 of her books, and I want more!

The romance is very well developed; each character has their own and unique personality. You don't get bored with Paula's books. They are also funny, very romantic and the writing style is great! It makes wish I could live in one of her stories.

5 Stars!

The Seduction of Miss Amelia Bell

The Seduction of Miss Amelia Bell
by Paula Quinn

Edmund MacGregor will do anything to save Scotland from English rule-even kidnap Lady Amelia Bell for ransom. As the daughter of a duke and the chancellor's betrothed, she's the perfect pawn in this game. But from the moment he first lays eyes on his spirited captive, he can't resist stealing a kiss . . .

Lady Amelia's duty is to marry well, but that hasn't stopped her from fantasizing about true love. So when a sexy Scot appears in her home, she's beguiled. When he kidnaps her, she's furious. Yet as Edmund introduces her to a world of passion beyond her wildest dreams, can she leave her family behind for this handsome Highlander? And will Edmund risk the only true home he's ever known to capture the heart of this lovely lass?

This book shouldn't be called The Seduction of Miss Amelia Bell. This book should really be called 'A Guide of How to Treat and Love a Woman by the McGregor Men.' This book made me wish the entire planet was Scotland because us women deserve and need a highlander like the McGregors in our lives.

Edmund kidnapped Amelia for ransom to keep Scotland safe from the British, but what he did not plan was to fall in love with her. I really love this book, the writing was great. The characters were all likable. Grendel (the dog) was my favorite. If historical romance is your genre, then this book is for you!

Retribution by Amy Thompson

Regan Edison has just moved from California, to enter her first year at Georgia Liberty College, the place where jacked up Chevy trucks and hunting are a way of life. Regan hopes to start a new life for herself and she thinks that Georgia is just the place to do it. That is until she meets an unexpected stranger.

Colter Hayes is a member of the Collectors, a group of wrongfully punished lost souls. Colter and the rest of his team, Finn, Kaiden and Devon, work for the Requiem Council who pass judgment on those souls that are neither tagged for Heaven nor Hell. The Council has charged the Collectors with finding the lost in exchange for a chance at redemption.

When an ex-councilmember known to pass Retribution on lost souls sets his sights on Regan, the Requiem Council dispatches the Collectors to Georgia to work as protectors for Regan. The Collectors must fight to save Regan from a fate they know all too well, but can they work to earn back their chance at redemption or are their fates sealed forever?

I got Retribution from Netgalley for exchange of a fair review.

OK ... where do I start? I really did not like this book. I really had high hopes for it! I love the cover and the title, but it did not work for me. I couldn't even bring myself to finish it.

There was too much information thrown at us at the beginning, all at once. But the thing is, it didn't even stop there, on every page I read there was another explanation about the Collectors, the Exiles, Agro, the Council, the souls. It was so confusing, I was like STOP PLEASE!

This is also another book about a girl going to college very far from home to start another new and happy life to leave behind her miserable past; you know, this kind of story is getting old. Anyway She got attacked by Agro's exiles, right? Her life was in extreme danger! Oh God someone help her! And that is when the Collectors, Colter and the other dudes, came to the rescue. While they were all fighting to save Reagan's life, she stood there and she said that all she felt when she saw Colter was lust! Yes! she was about to die and she was thinking about having a good ol' time with Colter.

Another thing that bothered me a lot is that Reagan said all the time: "Wait, what?" That was so annoying!

After that fight she took the Collector to her dorm. Seriously!? You do not take strangers home with you! Colter was an ass all of the time. He was really mean and rude to Reagan. If the Author's intention was to create a sexy tough guy, she did it wrong. Being mean, rude and an ass to a girl or anyone does not mean they are tough. It means they are a jerk.

XVI by Julia Karr
Allyson says: While not the best or most original dystopia novel out there, XVI offers up a stark look at what life would be like if all of our choices were taken away.

Every girl gets one.
An XVI tattoo on the wrist--sixteen.

Some girls can't wait to be sixteen, to be legal. Nina is not one of them. Even though she has no choice in the matter, she knows that so long as her life continues as normal, everything will be okay.

Then, with one brutal strike, Nina's normal is shattered; and she discovers that nothing that she believed about her life is true. But there's one boy who can help--and he just may hold the key to her past.

But with the line between attraction and danger as thin as a whisper, one thing is for sure...

For Nina, turning sixteen promises to be anything but sweet. _____________________________________________________________________
The Year Nick McGowan Came to Stay by Rebecca Sparrow
Mariela says: I love this book! It was so sweet and funny.

Seventeen-year-old Rachel Hill is the girl most likely to succeed. And the girl most likely to have everything under control . . . that is, until her dad invites Nick McGowan, the cutest boy at school, to live with them. Rachel worries that this could only be a recipe for disaster, but her best friend Zoe thinks it’s the perfect opportunity for lurve. Sparks start to fly for all the wrong reasons. Nick finds Rachel spoiled and uptight and Rachel dismisses Nick as lazy and directionless. But a secret from Nick’s past draws them together and makes the year Nick McGowan came to stay one that Rachel will never forget. _____________________________________________________________________
You Dropped a Blonde on Me by Dakota Cassidy
Allyson says: Maxine is just a really fun heroine, and while most of her problems are of her own doing, it's fun to watch her climb back out of the depths of a nasty divorce.

She was the perfect party-planning, haute-to-the max trophy wife. Now Maxine Cambridge is broke, unemployable and living with her mother and teenage son in a retirement village, with her self-esteem kicked to the curb.

Until her geeky former classmate Campbell Barker returns, all grown-up- and off-the-scale smokin' hot. Campbell refuses to believe Max isn't that smart, funny girl he's crushed on since high school. The more Max tries to show him he's wrong, the more she rediscovers her long-retired mojo. Now, she's ready to throw down some payback on her ex-life and fight for what she deserves... _____________________________________________________________________

You Don't Have to Say You Love Me by Sarra Manning
Nina says: It's a sweet love story but also the story of two deeply flawed characters and how the way you perceive your body and yourself doesn't necessarily have to reflect reality.

Sweet, bookish Neve Slater always plays by the rules. And the number one rule is that good-natured fat girls like her don't get guys like gorgeous, handsome William, heir to Neve's heart since university. But William's been in LA for three years, and Neve's been slimming down and re-inventing herself so that when he returns, he'll fall head over heels in love with the new, improved her.

So she's not that interested in other men. Until her sister Celia points out that if Neve wants William to think she's an experienced love-goddess and not the fumbling, awkward girl he left behind, then she'd better get some, well, experience.

What Neve needs is someone to show her the ropes, someone like Celia's colleague Max. Wicked, shallow, sexy Max. And since he's such a man-slut, and so not Neve's type, she certainly won't fall for him. Because William is the man for her... right?

Somewhere between losing weight and losing her inhibitions, Neve's lost her heart - but to who?_____________________________________________________________________
Zombies Vs. Unicorns
Allyson says: With so many amazing authors, there really is something for everyone in this anthology.

It's a question as old as time itself: which is better, the zombie or the unicorn? In this anthology, edited by Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier (unicorn and zombie, respectively), strong arguments are made for both sides in the form of short stories. Half of the stories portray the strengths--for good and evil--of unicorns and half show the good (and really, really bad-ass) side of zombies. Contributors include many bestselling teen authors, including Cassandra Clare, Libba Bray, Maureen Johnson, Meg Cabot, Scott Westerfeld, and Margo Lanagan. This anthology will have everyone asking: Team Zombie or Team Unicorn?_____________________________________________________________________

It's All Alphabetical - V&W

We are lucky enough to have some pretty awesome book lovers in our lives, and nothing makes us happier than getting good recommendations from them. In the spirit of that, we asked our friends to play the alphabet game with us and tell us exactly why you needed to be reading these books. So, here we go! Here are the V&W books that come recommended from highly trusted sources.

(A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, ST & U Lists)

The Vincent Boys by Abbi Glines
Nina says: It's the one book by Abbi Glines I truly enjoyed. I loved the drama and the romance and the fact that the lines between good and bad were pretty blurry.

Ashton is getting tired of being good, of impressing her parents and playing ideal girlfriend to Sawyer Vincent. Sawyer is perfect, a regular Prince Charming, but when he leaves town for the summer, it’s his cousin Beau who catches Ashton’s eye. Beau is the sexiest guy she’s ever seen, and even though he’s dangerous, Ashton is drawn to him.

Beau loves his cousin like a brother, so the last thing he wants to do is make a move on Sawyer’s girl. Ashton is off-limits, absolutely. That’s why he does his best to keep his distance, even though he’s been in love with her forever. When Ashton wants to rekindle their childhood friendship in Sawyer’s absence, Beau knows he should say no.

Ashton and Beau don’t want to hurt Sawyer. But the more they try to stay away from each other, the more intense their urges become. It’s getting way too hard to resist....
Vaclav and Lena by Haley Tanner
Bernadette says: It's a great book, filled with a heartwarming Russian love story.

Vaclav and Lena, both the children of Russian émigrés, are at the same time from radically different worlds. While Vaclav's burgeoning love of performing magic is indulged by hard-working parents pursuing the American dream, troubled orphan Lena is caught in a domestic situation no child should suffer through. Taken in as one of her own by Vaclav's big-hearted mother, Lena might finally be able to blossom; in the naive young magician's eyes, she is destined to be his "faithful assistant"...but after a horrific discovery, the two are ripped apart without even a goodbye. Years later, they meet again. But will their past once more conspire to keep them apart?_____________________________________________________________________

Wanderlove by Kristen Hubbard
Nina says: It's a beautiful story about a girl who - very reluctantly - sets out into the world on her own. She meets interesting people, sees strange places and really falls in love for the first time. I loved every second of it. And the authors illustrations made it even more special.

It all begins with a stupid question:

Are you a Global Vagabond?

No, but 18-year-old Bria Sandoval wants to be. In a quest for independence, her neglected art, and no-strings-attached hookups, she signs up for a guided tour of Central America—the wrong one. Middle-aged tourists with fanny packs are hardly the key to self-rediscovery. When Bria meets Rowan, devoted backpacker and dive instructor, and his outspokenly humanitarian sister Starling, she seizes the chance to ditch her group and join them off the beaten path.

Bria's a good girl trying to go bad. Rowan's a bad boy trying to stay good. As they travel across a panorama of Mayan villages, remote Belizean islands, and hostels plagued with jungle beasties, they discover what they've got in common: both seek to leave behind the old versions of themselves. And the secret to escaping the past, Rowan’s found, is to keep moving forward.

But Bria comes to realize she can't run forever, no matter what Rowan says. If she ever wants the courage to fall for someone worthwhile, she has to start looking back.

Kirsten Hubbard lends her artistry to this ultimate backpacker novel, weaving her drawings into the text. Her career as a travel writer and her experiences as a real-life vagabond backpacking Central America are deeply seeded in this inspiring story.
The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks
Bernadette says: It's an awesome read I love the characters in the story. This story about Allie and Noah 's daughter is getting married!!!

After thirty years of marriage, Wilson Lewis, son-in-law of Allie and Noah Calhoun (of The Notebook), is forced to admit that the romance has gone out of his marriage. Desperate to win back his wife, Jane's, heart, he must figure out how to make her fall in love with him... again. Despite the shining example of Allie and Noah's marriage, Wilson is himself a man unable to easily express his emotions. A successful estate attorney, he has provided well for his family, but now, with his daughter's upcoming wedding, he is forced to face the fact that he and Jane have grown apart and he wonders if she even loves him anymore. Wilson is sure of one thing--his love for his wife has only deepened and intensified over the years. Now, with the memories of his in-laws' magnificent fifty-year love affair as his guide, Wilson struggles to find his way back into the heart of the woman he adores. _____________________________________________________________________

Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr
Allyson says: Aislinn is the kind of character I love to read about. Strong and a little sassy, with a set of rules that have kept her alive thus far. Wicked Lovely is what happens when you break those rules and your whole life is turned upside down.

Rule #3: Don't stare at invisible faeries.
Aislinn has always seen faeries. Powerful and dangerous, they walk hidden in the mortal world. Aislinn fears their cruelty - especially if they learn of her Sight - and wishes she were as blind to their presence as other teens.

Rule #2: Don't speak to invisible faeries.
Now faeries are stalking her. One of them, Keenan, who is equal parts terrifying and alluring, is trying to talk to her, asking questions Aislinn is afraid to answer.

Rule #1: Don't ever attract their attention.
But it's too late. Keenan is the Summer King, who has sought his queen for nine centuries. Without her, summer itself will perish. He is determined that Aislinn will become the Summer Queen at any cost — regardless of her plans or desires.

Suddenly none of the rules that have kept Aislinn safe are working anymore, and everything is on the line: her freedom; her best friend, Seth; her life; everything.

Faery intrigue, mortal love, and the clash of ancient rules and modern expectations swirl together in Melissa Marr's stunning twenty-first-century faery tale. _____________________________________________________________________

Once inside, Nigel discovers that humans are not the only life-forms to have been sucked into the Void, where the laws of physics are subtly different and mental powers indistinguishable from magic are commonplace. The Heckmasters, Book 1

Except when they reach the near-deserted town, she learns the truth. There is no job, no future, and no welcome in the bleak blue eyes of the handsome sheriff.

The minute Rhia’s runaway team thunders into town, Wystan Heckmaster feels the change in the air. One of three sons of a demon who dared love a human, he keeps watch over a Pit guarded by seven seals, and slays any Hellbound demon that attempts to free the master imprisoned within.

With a gut full of regret and a forgotten town filled with reformed demons, Wystan is certain of one thing: he can’t be the man Rhia needs. But when the truth behind Rhia’s flight from Nebraska comes to light, Wystan must open his soul—and pray there’s enough love between them to overcome the darkness rising from the Pit.

Warning: Contains a take-no-prisoners sheriff, a woman who can’t outrun her supernatural secrets, and a dusty town where hope is as thin as dust in the wind. Author recommends keeping a glass of cool spring water at your elbow while reading.

Upstate New York, at the confluence of the great Hudson River and its mighty tributary the Mohawk —from this stunning landscape came the creation of a new world of science. In 1887, Thomas Edison moved his Edison Machine Works here and in 1892, it became the headquarters of a major manufacturing company, giving the town its nickname: Electric City.

The peak of Autumn, 1919: The pull of scientific discovery brings Charles Proteus Steimetz, a brilliant mathematician and recent arrival from Ellis Island, to town. His ability to capture lightning in a bottle earns him the title “Wizard of Electric City.” Barely four feet tall with a deeply curving spine, Steinmetz’s physical deformity belies his great intellect. Allied with his Mohawk friend Joseph Longboat and his adopted eleven-year-old granddaughter Midget, the advancements he makes in Electric City will, quite simply, change the world.

The peak of Autumn, 1965: Sophie Levine, the daughter of a company man, one of the many scientists working at The Company, whose electric logo can be seen from everywhere in town. Her family escaped Europe just before World War II, leaving behind a wake of annihilation and persecution. Ensconced in Electric City, Sophie is coming of age just as the town is gasping its last breaths. The town, and America as a whole, is on the cusp of great instability: blackouts, social unrest over Vietnam, and soon the advent of the seventies. Into her orbit drifts Henry Van Curler, the favored son of one of Electric City’s founding Dutch families, as well as Martin Longboat, grandson of Joseph Longboat. This new generation of Electric City will face both the history of their town and their own uncertain future, struggling to bridge the gap between the old world and the new.

Electric City is a vital, pulsing, epic novel of America, of its great scientific ingenuity and its emotional ambition; one that frames the birth and evolution of its towns against the struggles of its indigenous tribes, the immigrant experience, a country divided, and the technological advancements that ushered in the modern world.

Desperate to find the truth, Jenna enlists two unlikely allies in her quest. The first is Serenity Jones, a psychic who rose to fame finding missing persons—only to later doubt her gifts. The second is Virgil Stanhope, a jaded private detective who originally investigated Alice’s case along with the strange, possibly linked death of one of her colleagues. Channeling the turbulent period of the Vietnam War and its ruthless pitting of ideologies, cultures, generations, and races against each other, military historian and acclaimed fantasy writer Chris Evans takes a daring new approach to the traditional world of sword and sorcery by thrusting it into a maelstrom of racial animus, drug use, rebellion, and a growing war that seems at once unwinnable and with no end in sight. In this thrilling epic, right and wrong, country and honor, freedom and sacrifice are all put to the ultimate test in the heart of a dark, bloody, otherworldly jungle.

In this strange, new world deep among the shadows under a triple-canopy jungle and plagued by dangers real and imagined, soldiers strive to fulfill a mission they don’t understand and are ill-equipped to carry out. And high above them, the heavy rush of wings slashing through the humid air herald a coming wave of death and destruction, and just possibly, salvation. _____________________________________________________________________
